My creature entry for 's create-a-species contest.
The common Narrator Bug, or Bard Imp, is generally considered to be a harmless, if annoying, pest to adventurers. Any group of three or more on a quest eventually attracts a narrator bug, which follows the group at a distance and speaks in a rich tenor, usually with a British accent, about whats happening. They are usually well dressed in aged clothing, and walk with a strange birdlike gait. They don't seem to understand much besides stories, and when directly addressed usually begin with "once upon a time,..." and speak in third person. Narrator Bugs document adventures meticulously and if trained, make excellent office assistants and take to paperwork and dictation naturally. With their antennae and four sets of eyes, they are constantly aware of their surroundings, making them nearly impossible to take by surprise and when attacked are unpredictable and agile fighters, employing powerful taloned kicks.
In all their years of existence, no one's really sure what they eat... evidence supports that they survive off of failed adventurers.
